Esteemed MUN directors, dear delegates,
This year the 20th session of the Deutsche Schule Athen Model United Nations will be held on the premises of our school. 20 years, thousands of participants, millions of ideas with a common goal in mind: Arming young people with a set of values, knowledge and critical thinking through an educational institution based on dialogue and democracy. We cordially invite you to join us in our efforts and participate in this conference, which will be taking place from the 20th to the 22nd of October 2017.
Model United Nations is rare opportunity for young people passionately interested in current global political and international affairs to express their opinions and experience a real-life diplomatic simulation. For 20 years, our school has been enabling participants from all around the globe to come in contact with a multicultural environment and face up to challenges adults and professionals have long pondered on, acquiring valuable knowledge as well as social and organizational skills in the process. This 20th session will be taking place during a time of particularly intense economic, social and political turmoil: We are experiencing fundamental shifts in the global balance of power, the outcome of which will determine humanity's stance on crucial matters such as the preservation of civil society, humanitarian values and the possible prospect of an environmental disaster. With the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean evoking a response from the European Union which clashes with the very principles it was founded upon, the change in global political alliances and a collective shift towards populism, the introduction of new technologies and the ethical dilemmas that accompany them as well as increasing occurrences of natural disasters are bound to make this year's session especially challenging and controversial in all of its aspects. Even though the nature of diplomacy compels us to comprehend and support vastly contrasting policies, we encourage all participants to engage in this conference with the common aims and values promoted by the United Nations, namely to improve this world for generations to come.
This year's agenda consists of a blend of issues: Those which have historically troubled the international community, such as the question of Cyprus, coordinating an international response to terrorism and climate change as well as political instability in Colombia, and those that have only recently arisen and have yet to be confronted, such as the dilemma surrounding the use of drones for humanitarian relief, the rights of transgender employees and the issue of asteroid mining. It is expected of new generations not only to do away with long-standing past problems but to simultaneously adapt to the issues of a new global reality.
Therefore, the topics of this year's Special Conference on Young People focus on the enhancement of young peoples' abilities to become active future citizens of a globalized world. The participation of young and well-informed citizens in decision-making processes constitutes the only way to improve people's lives and ensure the preservation of democracy and sustainable development worldwide. Consequently, we are obliged to promote the improvement of educational systems in order to equip young people with knowledge and courage and prepare them to face future challenges.
Finally, we believe that this year's conference will be a memorable experience for all aspiring young diplomats aiming to make our world a safer place for everyone regardless of country of origin, gender and personal beliefs.
On behalf of the DSAMUN organizing team, we look forward to meeting you in October.
Sincerely,
The Secretary General The President of the General Assembly The Deputy President of the General
Assembly

Invitation - 20th Deutsche Schule Athen Model United Nations Conference
- Last Updated: Tuesday, 07 February 2017 09:32
Dear MUN Director, Advisor, Colleague,
We cordially invite you to the 20th DSAMUN Conference (Deutsche Schule Athen Model United Nations Conference) to be held from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 October 2017 at Deutsche Schule Athen / Germaniki Scholi Athinon (GSA).
DSAMUN is a three-day-long simulation of the work of the United Nations. It is designed for secondary school students (Greek Lykeion/grades 10-12) and is intended to provide an occasion for the delegates to discuss world issues. It gives them the opportunity to experience the work of the United Nations and to get to know the world of diplomacy. For students from schools where the first language is not English an MUN conference also offers the opportunity to develop and practice their English, as the official language of DSAMUN (preparing resolutions, lobbying, debating) is English.
DSAMUN has 4 General Assembly Committees (Special Political and Decolonization Committee, Disarmament and International Security Committee, Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee and Environmental Committee) and 5 specialized committees (Security Council, ECOSOC, Special Conference on Young People, Youth Assembly and International Court of Justice).
The delegates should research and prepare draft resolutions and policy statements on the various issues and learn to negotiate and debate in the formal way of the United Nations. By attending DSAMUN, foreign delegates will have the great opportunity to visit the Acropolis, the new Acropolis Museum and all the other places of interest in Athens. On Saturday 21 October an optional excursion to Nemea will be organized. Special rates for accommodation will be offered.
The MUN website (www.dsamun.gr) provides you with all the necessary detailed information. You register online.
