14th Deutsche Schule Athen Model United Nations Conference

We would like to invite you to the 14th DSAMUN (Deutsche Schule Athen Model United Nations) to be held from Thursday 20 to Saturday 22 October 2011 at the German School of Athens / Germaniki Scholi Athinon (GSA).

The DSAMUN is a three-day-long simulation of the work of the United Nations. It is designed for secondary school students (Greek Lykeion or grades 10-12) and is intended to provide an occasion for the delegates to discuss world issues. It gives them the opportunity to experience the work of the United Nations and to get to know the world of diplomacy. For students from schools where the first language is not English an MUN conference also offers the opportunity to develop and practice their English, as the official language of DSAMUN (preparing resolutions, lobbying, debating) is English.

The delegates should research and prepare draft resolutions and policy statements on the various issues (from the view of the country they represent) and learn to negotiate and debate in the formal way of the United Nations. By attending the DSAMUN, foreign delegates will have the great opportunity to visit the Acropolis, the new Acropolis Museum and all the other places of interest in Athens. On Sunday 23 October an optional excursion to Nafplion / Mycenae will be organized. Special rates for accommodation will be offered.

Honourable MUN directors, dear participants,

As the Secretariat of the 14th DSAMUN conference we are very proud to  invite you to our conference, which will be taking place from the 20th to the 22nd October 2011 in the Deutsche Schule Athen. Having reiterated our expertise and reliability last year, we feel  capable of standing up to the standards of a successful and officially The Hague-affiliated conference and superseding your expectations.

During this three-day meeting young and ambitious students are offered the unique opportunity of debating on issues of vital importance and getting involved in international affairs. In an era of political, social and economic unrest, our agenda aims at bridging indifference between states and restoring stability. Concerning international security, the upcoming Disarmament Committee will deal with an initiative launched by many world leaders in the field of nuclear non-proliferation, namely the Global Zero campaign. Furthermore, the future of Europe is a matter of serious concern that should be handled with great responsibility and consideration of the visions of the Union as well as the global markets. Targeting at balancing the financial profit of tourism, especially for LEDCs, with the respect for local environments and indigenous people, the Environmental and Cultural Committee will be discussing the necessity of ecotourism.

With reference to the subject of the Special Conference, a great emphasis will be put on the Fundamental Principles of Press and Media Freedom this year. The publications of Wikileaks, a website which reveals a variety of top secret diplomatic data and documents , and the uproar they have brought about worldwide have drawn attention to questions such as: “To what extent should the media be free?”, “Should interstate affairs remain hidden or brought into light?” or “Would in that case the principles of the UN Charter be respected?”

All of these issues are bound to enrich the students’ knowledge, empower their self-determination, improve their skills in rhetoric and diplomacy, provoke them to take action and contribute to the combat of the problems our world has to deal with daily and stand up for the rights of the country they are representing.

On behalf of the German School of Athens and the DSAMUN Board of Directors we wish to once again sincerely invite you to the 14th DSAMUN and look forward to seeing you in our school.

Yours faithfully,

Thanassis Kyritsis                                              Fani Davelu-Baum
Secretary General                                            President of the General Assembly
